DINING ROOM REVAMP WITH WEST ELM |AD

DINING ROOM REVAMP WITH WEST ELM |AD

A few weeks ago I walked you through the Dining room revamp inspo ands ideas. I can finally say the Dining room revamp is complete.

As I previously mentioned the dining room has evolved with its uses over the years. Now that my children are that bit older and more responsible (she says) I felt it was time to create a more lux grown up dining space.

One of the biggest changes in the room as you can see is the paint. I painted the walls in Graham & Brown Darcy which has a subtle pink undertone. The ceiling is painted in Merlot which has a deep Rouge purple tone, I’ve brought the Merlot down the front of the chimney breast to draw your eye to the statement furniture in the centre of the room.

Dining table- West Elm. silhouette marvel top oval. Lenox Dining chairs. Far right- Penelope mini Desk with the Jane Dining chair.

CREATING A STATEMENT DINING AREA

As part of the Dining Room revamp I wanted the dining table to be a focal paint of the room. I needed a table that was spacious enough for my family and for when we have guests. Shape and texture was also high up on my list to give warmth and dimension to the room. It’s been no secret that the West Elm oval silhouette table has been on my lust list for quite some time. The sleek shape and design I’m sure you will agree is a real statement piece and happily takes centre stage. I chose the Lenox Dining chairs to compliment the table, their elegant Art Deco curve hugs perfectly round the oval table.

With any statement table you need a statement lighting especially if you have a freshly painted ceiling. The Sphere + Stem 6 light Chandelier is so simple but in equal measure so striking in design. This hangs perfectly above our table.

Esme Fluted Glassware, Gilded Brushstrokes Coasters, Wood Slice Charger, Blush Tapered candles, ice glass candleholders

To finish off the Dining area you need some stunning dinnerware because it’s important to be the envy of all your guests. West Elm have just released the Reactive Glaze dinnerware range. This range comes in various colours, but the dusty mint grabbed my heart. Like every magpie the Smith cutlery in Gold cought my beady eye and is in keeping with the lux vibe I want to achieve. Gold cutlery still looks good even when you are just eating beans on toast.

ATTRACTIVE YET PRACTICAL WORKSPACE

One of the first things I did when starting the revamp was to clear out the old toy cupboard. This was a handy piece of furniture we brought from our old house that became redundant now the children are that bit older. Clearing out the dried up play dough and random pieces of Lego felt quit cathartic. Passing the cupboard onto a new home gave me space to create my very own work area that I’ve craved ever since starting this blog. I really didn’t want to comprimose on style when it came to creating this work area. I was also limited with the space I had. The Desk had to fit snugly in the alcove of the chimney breast, also had to compliment the dining area.

The Penelope Mini Desk was the perfect measurement for the alcove, its oval shape and marble top works well next to the dining area. As this is a multi use room I chose the Jane Dining Chair in blush. Perfect if we needed an extra seat at the dining table. The Retro table lamp is bringing that vintage vibe and in keeping with the round and oval shape I’m creating in this room.

CHRISTMAS PRESENTS IDEAL FOR AUTISTIC CHILDREN

CHRISTMAS PRESENTS IDEAL FOR AUTISTIC CHILDREN

IT’S THAT TIME OF YEAR WE ALL GO INTO SHEER PANIC.

CHRISTMAS PRESENT PANIC TO BE PRECISE, ESPECIALLY WHEN YOU HAVE A CHILD WITH AUTISM.

Christmas is always different in our home. I have two children,  my eldest Maisy who is Neurotypical and my youngest Chester who has Autism. I have experienced two very different types christmases over the years.

Pre Chester and autism days Christmas was your stereotypical festivities. When Chester was diagnosed at 18 months Christmas traditions for us soon changed. Change can be scary, the unknown but change isn’t a negative.

We soon found what worked for us and especially Chester.

Buying presents for Chester has been hit and miss in the past. I feel that we are now in a place where we know what he likes. On that note let’s take a look at presents that we have tried, tested and recommend or the ones are on Chesters Christmas list this year.

WOODEN MAGIC CUBE FACE PATERN

I came across the wooden magic face blocks game whilst browsing amazon. Facial expressions can be confusing for people with autism. This game can be played alone or up to four people. it’s a interactive game by putting together the correct face pattern to match the face on the chosen card.

FIDGET TOY BOX

I love these fidget boxes. They are a great sensory box that help help reduced anxiety and a great distraction.I buy these all year round as they really do bring a lot of joy to Chester and sensory feedback.

KINETIC SAND

We have been such fans of Kinetic Sand for years. There is so many types of boxes you can buy, a favourite of mine is the ice cream set. This year I’ve bought this carry box, perfect to keep together safely. Be warned even though this is pretty much mess free I still recommend sitting on a picnic blanket whilst this is being played with.

FOAM POGO JUMPER

We bought a foam pogo stick for Chester a few years back and it was a real hit. If you don’t have an indoor mini trampoline in the Winter months then this will give your child sensory feedback that jumping normally gives them.

GLOW MAGNETIC RINGS

I was introduced to these by an instagram follower. They a similar to the popular fidget spinner that everyone went crazy for a few years ago. I know the Magnetic Ring Spinz will be a perfect stocking filler for Chester this year.

Thank you so much for taking thew time to read this blogpost. If you have any recommendations I would love to hear them…. pop me a comment.

HOW TO CREATE A TACKY CHIC CHRISTMAS

HOW TO CREATE A TACKY CHIC CHRISTMAS

WHAT IS TACKY CHIC AND HOW TO CREATE IT.

house of Chester christmas 2019

Time for a little Christmas story, grab your mulled wine and get comfortable.

My whole adult life we has purchased a real christmas tree, with our hand me down decorations. There is nothing like a real christmas to get you feeling those festive vibes is there?

When my children grew older they would ask for the tree to be put up earlier and earlier to the point we was almost putting it up on the 1st November.

Fast forward to 2016.

2016 was the year I found my Christmas identity, my Tacky Chic identity.

ROCKING AROUND THE CHRISTMAS TREE.

The day I decided that I wanted to go to the artificial side I knew I wanted to be the further end of the tree spectrum.

To start me Tacky Chic journey I set my heart on a white christmas tree. I chose the 6ft pre lit Winter White Christmas tree from Treetopia. I am often asked where I bought my tree from, Unfortunately Treetopia do not sell in the UK anymore but if you are in America and are looking for a well made artificial tree at a reasonable price look no further.

If you are looking for a new tree this christmas then STOP. I’ve found a few trees I fell in love whilst browsing the web that will put you on Santas good list. To top it off these trees will fit perfectly in the Tacky Chic aesthetic.

Argos Home 6ft Cashmere Artificial Christmas Tree – Pink
John Lewis Twinkly Rainbow Pre-Lit 7ft Christmas Tree

MAKE YOUR OWN TRADITION

Growing up my childhood home went from 80s foil garlands hanging from the ceiling then as the years went on to a more traditional red and gold theme. Being a a young child of the 80s I feel so much nostagia seeing anything that is similar to the foil stars, garlands and colourful glass baubles. I haven’t gone as far as the satin bauble’s though.

Decorating my tree I tend to lean towards the fun alternative style bauble’s. I’m not shy of chucking a bit of tinsel on there either…. we are going for the Tacky Chic look after all.

Here is a selection of stores I FRICKING LOVE to buy my tree decs from. I can’t resist not sharing some I’m completely lusting after to a few you know already don my tree each year.

W A GREEN is a store I have been shopping at fo all of my of my Tacky Chic years, my favourite is their kick arse selection of Cody Foster Co decorations.

W A GREEN-John Lennon

W A GREEN SANTA 2020

W A GREEN LIPS WITH CIGARETTE. A personal favourite of mine that always gets a lot of love when I share my tree.

W A GREEN DISCO BALL TREE TOPPER. THESE ARE A REAL STATEMENT PIECE, SO MUCH SO I HAVE THE SIVER ONE ON MY TREE.

INDEPENDENT STORE DESIGN BY SEEN WAS A GEM I DISCOVERED THIS YEAR, AND WHAT A CORKER.

SEED COSMIC DECORATION
SEED BANNA SPLIT. A TRUE CORKER OF A DECORATION THAT IS TAKING CENTRE STAGE ON MY TREE THIS YEAR.

DECK THE HALLS

Any of you who may follow me on instagram probably know by now that I’m a bit obsessive when it comes to decorating my lounge fireplace. Pinwheels, pom poms and tassels make me weak at the knees. throw in some glitter and shimmer well what can I say.

Last year I created the colourful pom pom garland, this year was the shimmer, tassel larger than life pinwheel fireplace.

All of this years decorations I purchased from a local Essex independent store called Otherletters. Run by two dedicated ladies who bend over backward when it comes to customer service. If you’re looking for decorations that are a little bit different then its worth giving then a visit online if you are not local.

I hope that this has given you some Inspiration for your Christmas decorations. Please visit my Instagram @house_of_chester for more Christmas inspiration.

FIVE STATEMENT CEILING LIGHTS UNDER £100

FIVE STATEMENT CEILING LIGHTS UNDER £100

When it comes to buying lights it can be rather costly. Especially if you want to make a real statement.

Working on my dining room revamp I saw this as the perfect opportunity to have the electrician change a couple of the ugly ceiling lights we inherited with our home.

With a project list as long as my arm, I needed to keep the cost as low as possible.

Whilst searching the internet I found some really beautiful brass lights that are all under £100. If you too are in need of some lower budget ceiling light inspiration I may have found you a couple of gems.

POUNDLAND HACK| HOW TO REMOVE WAX FROM A CANDLE JAR

POUNDLAND HACK| HOW TO REMOVE WAX FROM A CANDLE JAR

POUNDLAND

THE STORE THAT IS YOUR GO TO, TO BUY CHEAP SNACKS AND CLEANING PRODUCTS.

BUT IS IT?

POUNDLAND HAS STARTED TO DIP ITS TOE INTO THE WORLD OF HOMEWARE AND  HAVE  PRODUCED SOME REAL GEMS.

WHO REMEMBERS THE ZEBRA AND  CACTI VASES? I REST MY CASE.

On a recent Poundland dash of my own to buy barney bears and toothpaste I was stopped in my tracks. For months I’ve lusted after the textured glass vase from H&M Home. Don’t get me wrong with the vase range costing under £20 it’s hardly breaking the bank.

Poundland have now released a range of candles in a very similar design to the H&M Home vase and you guessed it they only cost a pound.

Yes my heart did skip a little beat with excitement thinking of all it’s uses. My only issue was, the candle wax. I’m impatient for one and two well there is no two I’m just really impatient and I want to use the jar ASAP.

I’m a custom to burning the candle at both ends but I didn’t have the first clue how to remove a whole candle wax from the jar.

After chatting with my Instagram followers about the subject and a bit of googling I came up with my plan. Now it’s time to share this information with you.

HOW TO UPDATE YOUR HALLWAY WITHOUT DECORATING WITH POSTERLOUNGE AD

HOW TO UPDATE YOUR HALLWAY WITHOUT DECORATING WITH POSTERLOUNGE AD

THERE ARE LARGE ONES,THERE ARE SKINNY ONES, THERE ARE SHORT ONES, THERE ARE LONG ONES…. WHAT AM I TALKING ABOUT? HALLWAYS OF COURSE.

The last  hallway update was late 2018,when my love for Farrow & Ball Hague Blue was at its peak. Admittedly I still have big love for Hague Blue but I do become bored very easily. Instagram and Pinterest can often make you feel like a child in a sweet shop. I’ll have one of those and one of those and before you know it you’re decorating the same space multiple times a year.

I started to question myself, if you love Hague Blue then why change it? Why not find ways to update the space without decorating.

When the online print store Posterlounge contacted me about a collaboration I saw this as a perfect opportunity to use prints as a way to update this space, more on that a bit later.
